Parenting Children from Hard Places

We are pleased to offer this six-session course covering TBRI, Trust-Based Relational Intervention. Each session will cover a different topic, ranging from how the brain develops in a child living in trauma to parenting teenagers.

Each session is $10, which includes childcare and snacks. *Any adult is welcome to attend however, childcare is only available for regular, individual foster homes* You can come to just one of them or all of them, depending on what topics you’re interested in. We are offering a $10 discount if you sign up for all 6 sessions at once. Each session will start at 9:00am and end between 11:30am-1:30pm depending on the topic. You can earn anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 CEUs per session with a total of 18.5 CEUs if you attend all six.

Session 1, May 5 TBRI Overview 9:00am to 12:00pm
The Introductory session will explain the principles and concepts behind TBRI, a proven method for enriching the lives of at-risk, vulnerable children, adolescents and their families. The second part of the session will explore the impact of trauma on a developing brain and explains how fear, chronic stress and various types of trauma damage the structure, wiring and chemistry of the brain, putting the child at risk for a lifetime of social, learning and behavioral problems.

We will discover practical advice and tips for leading children of all ages – even teens – to new levels of healing through new and positive experiences and trusting relationships with consistently nurturing caregivers.

Session 2, May 19 Attachment 9:00am to 12:00pm
We will explore the critical role of attachment in a child’s development. Most of us think of attachment as a loving bond between parent and child. But, what happens if a child doesn’t get nurturing, consistent care from a loving parent early in life? Can a parent love a child or a child love a parent, but still not feel securely connected? And what are the consequences of insecure attachments? The insights and practical advice offered in this session can help any parent, especially those who care for children with histories of trauma.

Session 3, June 2 Trust-Based Parenting 9:00am to 1:30pm
This session offers in-depth training for parents of children with trauma-based behavioral issues. It is based on more than a decade of research and hands-on work with vulnerable children and their families. These ‘children from hard places’ have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment and/or trauma in early development. Their survival behaviors can be confusing, frustrating and difficult to manage even for the most patient and loving parents.

Session 4, June 16 Sensory and Healthy Touch 9:00am to 11:30pm
The first half of this training will offer insight and understanding about sensory issues hat may make it difficult for a child to function at home and school. You will learn to recognize the difference between sensory problems and problem behaviors and how to help children overcome everyday struggles that hamper their success. The second half of the training will explore the importance of touch, particularly as a tool for promoting healing and developing deeper connections between parents and children.

Session 5, July 7 Playful Interaction 9:00am to 11:30pm
Play is central to a child’s well-being now and in the future. Through play, children learn to develop the social and emotional skills they need to succeed in life. This session outlines the importance of play and provides practical examples of playful interaction from the Institute of Child Development’s Hope Connection Camp.

Session 6, July 21 TBRI for Teens 9:00am to 12:00pm
Developing a trusting relationship with any teenager can be a challenge. For teenagers with traumatic backgrounds of abuse, neglect or broken homes, it’s especially challenging for both the teens and the adults who care for them.

We will follow a dozen youth, ages 11-18, and a dozen staffers throughout a four-day camp in Waco, TX. We will see the remarkable changes in the teens and the adults as they put TBRI into practice.

What’s an Info Meeting?

As part of The CALL’s mission to educate, encourage and equip the local church we hold Information Meetings every month. In Crawford and Sebastian Counties these are always held the second Monday of each month and take about 2 hours, if you stay the entire time. These meetings are open to anyone in the community and are held at a different local church each month. So what is an Information Meeting?

An Information Meeting is just as it sounds, a meeting where you can get information. Whether you are interested in fostering or adopting or just finding out more about the need in our area. These events will cover all of those topics and more. We begin by presenting information about The CALL, who we are, what we do, our mission and vision. Then we discuss the need in our area. Did you know Sebastian County has more kids in care than anywhere in the state? We will discuss the number of children, the number of current homes available and the different types of homes. We will also talk about the way The CALL partners with DCFS (Department of Child and Family Services). At the conclusion of our presentation a representative from DCFS speaks.

The DCFS Representative will discuss DCFS’ role in the process. Their presentation will review some of the requirements such as training, paperwork and home studies. They will be available to answer any questions you may have and to clarify any confusion or misunderstandings. There are a lot of misconceptions out there; you may be surprised what you learn! After the presentations are complete we take a short break. This is an informal gathering so you are welcome to take a break or have a snack at anytime. We take a formal break after the presentations so no one feels like they have to stay. We are not here to make you uncomfortable or feel obligated to complete the meeting. We understand how difficult and life changing this process can be and we would never want anyone to become a foster or adoptive parent unless they are called by God to do so and feel completely comfortable with their decision.

After the break we will thank everyone for coming and you are free to leave at this time if do not wish to proceed further or if you want more time to think about it. However, if you are interested in starting the process toward fostering or adoption you are welcome to stay. We will pass out the necessary paperwork, including background checks, to get you started. We also have a Notary Public present at all Information Meetings so the background checks can be completed and mailed in the next day. Once you are finished with that, there’s a short online survey you can complete at home and then you can sign up for one of our PRIDE trainings.

As you can see a lot goes on at these meetings and it takes teamwork, from the church to our staff to the volunteers to make it all happen. We know the process can be long and difficult but The CALL is here to make it easier, not only to get started but with support along they way. When you sign up with us we not only walk you through the process of becoming an ‘open home’ but we’ll be here for you even after you’ve started fostering or finalized an adoption. Once you start the process with us, you will always be a CALL Family.

Rolling for The CALL

Looking for a fun and easy way to help local foster parents? The CALL is hosting a Bunco fundraiser on April 14, 2018. Tickets are only $10 and will include appetizers, drinks and multiple opportunities to win great prizes. Some of our prizes include, free babysitting, Michael Kors sunglasses, Razorback tumblers, Jamberry Nail Wraps and much more! If you’ve never played Bunco, don’t worry, our Placement Supervisor from DCFS Tambra, will be facilitating the event. We will even have a prize for the biggest loser!
In Crawford & Sebastian County there are over 700 children in care with less than 200 homes to care for them. Many of our children, especially those over 6, reside in group homes or emergency shelters. While these facilities fill a great need, there are still not enough beds in Crawford & Sebastian Counties for every child. Not only does The CALL recruit new homes, we also work with our local partners to support existing homes. One of the biggest challenges facing children in care is finding a stable environment where they feel safe to work through their issues. Many of our children have challenging behaviors because of the trauma they have faced. By supporting our existing families and helping them connect with local therapists and specialists we can ensure longer and more stable placements. Without this stability our children will take longer to heal and may never deal positively with the trauma they have faced.
All proceeds earned at Rolling for The CALL will go directly toward recruiting, training and supporting local foster parents. We partner with many local churches to recruit new families, including holding monthly Information Meetings for potential homes and volunteers. Back to School Giveaway

The CALL in Crawford & Sebastian Counties will host the 2nd annual Back to School Giveaway in August. We are currently collecting items to provide school supplies to every school aged child in Area 2.

Blessing Baskets

Blessing basket

During the Christmas season we started collecting laundry baskets filled with household items to give to our local foster families. The families were so appreciative of the thought, we have committed to offering a basket to each family twice a year and one for each newly opened home.
